ITMCTR Hosted Its First Series of Academic Activities

On the afternoon of May 6, 2024, ITMCTR held the first session of its academic series at China Center for Evidence Based Traditional Chinese Medicine. The topic of discussion was “Ethical Review of Clinical Trials”, and the event featured a presentation by Director Zi Mingjie from the Ethics Office of Xiyuan Hospital, China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences, who shared her insights and experiences.
Director Zi began with a talk titled “Thoughts on the Construction and Standardized Management of Medical Ethics Committees”, discussing the role of ethics committees, their standardized management, and their integration into the broader ethical review system. She emphasized that ethics committees are a vital part of the ethical review system and suggested that the management of these committees should involve clear responsibilities, proper training, and well-defined roles. Additionally, she highlighted that the development of the ethical review system should focus on coordination, office management, and review capacity.
Next, Director Zi provided a detailed interpretation of national policies and regulations related to ethical review, such as the “Ethical Review Measures for Biomedical Research Involving Humans,” the “Technology Ethics Review Measures (Trial),” and the “Ethical Review Measures for Life Sciences and Medical Research Involving Humans”. She discussed the differences and connections between these policies and shared insights on pre-job training and qualification assessments for ethics committee members, including the systems in different countries and the year-end evaluations of committee members. She reiterated the importance of continuous review throughout the research process and the need for regular training of committee members.
In the Q&A session, Director Zi addressed several issues, including multi-center mutual recognition, the validity period of ethical approval documents, and the construction of ethics committees. She also shared the ethical review application process publicly available on the Xiyuan Hospital website (https://www.xyhospital.com/Html/News/Articles/20540.html), providing a systematic overview of the proper ethical review application procedures.
The event was a great success, offering valuable educational and informative content for attendees.
